Smiling Strange has been one of our favourite artists since waaaay back in the early days of LIquid Library - they actually contributed a song to out first ever compilation. The latest collection-as-collage is yet another slice of fried gold, as to be expected.
Recorded 95% on Tascam 4-track and then stitched together in Audacity into 2 side-length slabs, Smiling Strange continues to explore the signature guided-by-voices-as-ambient-noise sound. Somehow melding anthemic alterna-rock with musique concrete to produce something that is both catchy as hell and totally ignorable (in a furniture-music kind of way). It's harsh and crackly, but also soothing and warm. It's pop music with outsider sensibilities (or possibly the other way round). It's a collection of songs, but also a sprawling free-improv quilt. A singular aesthetic that is at once familiar and original.
