about

Three interpretations of Daniel J Gregory's sun-bleached masterpiece "Colour Of August"

In Dan's own words;
"Colour of August began life in my bedroom at my parents house sometime around 2012. I was attempting to recreate the blissed out noise of Fennesz - Endless Summer in Fruity Loops, using the basic pad sounds included plus a bunch of distortion and compression plugins. The sound of Endless Summer to me, perfectly encompassed the golden August sun, the heat, the freedom. To be honest it was just for my own amusement, though I did upload them to soundcloud and eventually forgot about them. Fast forward to 2019 and I've began making music in an entirely different way. Acoustic instruments, junk, objects. Listening to Pharoah Sanders and Sissy Spacek in equal measures. I was also creating lots of collages out of old postcards and found photos, plus I was in the midst of falling in love with a girl who is now my wife. These things in particular spurred me on to look back at those Fennesz wannabe tracks sitting on my old soundcloud page. I wanted to create an album that captured that summer bliss, being out in nature and falling in love. I wanted to make music bathed in that Endless Summer golden hue. I wanted it to feel like being surrounded by a wild flower meadow in blazing heat. I hope it works for you. Thanks for listening.

The album came out on the wonderful Luxury Bucket label on 1st August 2019, shortly after I had completed it. I had no intention of looking back at the album at the time, but as its first year of existence approached, I felt I needed to do something new with it. I toyed with the idea of completely redoing the album myself, but I knew that I'd never be happy with it. So I approached a few artists who I greatly admire, and who I thought would be able to create something complimentary to my original, but also new and different enough to be exciting and interesting not only for me but for other people to listen to too. I always try to not repeat myself too much with my music, so Colour of August will hopefully always sit as a singular work of mine, so it feels right to let other people approach and interpret the album in their styles and with their sounds. Hopefully this all isn't too self indulgent! Thanks to everyone involved and everyone who has said nice things about the album."

Caroline Mckenzie offers a woozy dream like set of music that is design to be played at the same time as the original album (with her music in channels 3 & 4)
Shit Creek pulls apart the music by the seams and paints and impressionistic shimmering landscape
Carnivorous Plants re-contextualizes the music for the summer of 2020 to include thunderstorms, apocalypse and loneliness
